Crime Prevention Tips
Regis University’s Department of Campus Safety provides a number of services, and programs to the campus community to ensure the safety and security of our community, buildings and property. Our services strive to emphasize proactive measures, minimizing the need for reactive responses. Although you cannot prevent another's actions, there are steps you can take to reduce the opportunity of falling victim to a criminal incident We must all take responsibility for our own safety and the safety of others. Promptly and accurately reporting any and all criminal acts, dangerous situations, and suspicious behavior greatly assists in the provision of a safe campus community.
Crime prevention strategies are safety precautions that encourage intentional planning and informed behaviors that will help you avoid risk and minimize the repercussions of a criminal incident.
- Park in well-lit areas that allow you to have good fields of view to and from your vehicle. Lock your car doors and roll up the windows completely—even if you're only parking for a moment.
- Take notice of the Call Boxes, Blue Light Phones, and Emergency phones located throughout the campus that can be used to call for help.
- Lock your car and remove valuables which will reduce the risk of being a victim of a crime of opportunity.
- Never leave your items, backpack, laptop, etc., unattended for any length of time.
- If you have a bicycle use a u-lock style bike lock and take your lock through the front tire and around your frame. You can also utilize the indoor bicycle storage area at DeSmet Hall.
- Keep keys in your hand which will allow you quicker and safer access to your vehicle or building.
- Walk with purpose and be aware of your surroundings and the people in them. If you think you are being followed, or notice someone who is suspicious, go to a place of safety and call DCS at 303-458-4122. Stay aware of your surroundings. Listening to music or using your phone can distract you from people or vehicles around you.
- Walk in pairs or groups with a trusted friend(s) to minimize your vulnerability. When going to parties or on community walks, have a friend with you to assure you both are safe.
- Call Campus Safety for a safety escort (303-458-4122) 24 hours a day for anywhere on the Northwest Denver Campus.
- Never loan out your ID/access card to anyone and promptly report if it is lost or stolen.
- While on campus, report suspicious activity to Campus Safety Immediately. For life-threatening situations dial 911 for police, fire, and medical response. Report any unusual or suspicious activity that you witness. Even the smallest bit of information could prevent a crime and help protect yourself or others.
- Keep your doors locked, even if you are in the room. Do not allow people to follow you into secure locations. Request that a "tailgater" use his or her key or swipe card to gain entry.
- Record serial numbers
- Tell a friend when you are going out, with whom, where, and when you expect to be back. Ask them to call you if you are overdue.
- If you choose to drink, drink legally and responsibly. Your ability to respond is diminished by overconsumption of alcohol.
